What are cholesterols?
Cholesterols, often called blood fats, are waxy, fat-like substance created by the liver and play a very important role in supporting organs of the body to fulfill their functions such as maintaining cells’ membrane in proper condition, triggering the process of metabolism of the body, helping the body to absorb vitamin D from the sun light, and supporting the biliary gland in digestion of the food fats.
Why we get high blood cholesterol levels?
75 % of cholesterol content in our body is secreted by the liver and the rest 25 % comes from the food you take in daily. Therefore an incorrect regime of nutrition can easily lead to the risk of high cholesterol level in your blood. Generally speaking, saturated fats and cholesterols are present in animal-based foods including meat, eggs, and dairy products.
Besides by way of daily food intake, high blood cholesterol levels can also be caused by hereditary or genetic charateristics. Some people inherit special genes that can stimulate too much secretion of cholesterols by the liver causing abnormal level of cholesterols in the blood.
What are the effects of high cholesterol level in the blood?
High blood cholesterol number usually does not cause any apparent symtoms. Nevertheless it can cause damages deep in your body organs. By the time, too much cholesterols can gradually build up inside your artery’s wall forming plaques clinging to it and restrict the blood flow in what known as arteriosclerosis and may lead to cardiovascular diseases, high blood pressure, and finally strokes due to rupture of the blood vessels.
When do we need to test blood cholesterol level?
Adults over 20 years old need to have blood cholesterol level test once every 5 years. This is a simple blood test to measure different lipoproteins number in the blood stream after 9 hours restraint from food. Test results will show “good” and “bad” cholesterol number and triglycerides number in the blood to help provide with appropriate treatment.
Preventing damages caused by high blood cholesterol level
It takes many years before high blood cholesterol level can cause clogging in the arteries (atherosclerosis). However there are proofs that artherosclerosis can be relieved, at least to a certain extent.
Nutrition specialists has proclaimed some researches demonstrating that a diet regime of low fat and supplemented with saturated fatty acids, controlling of stress, and reasonable excercising can eliminate the process of plaques forming inside coronary arteries.
